(Cue scene!)
{Mouri, Ran, and Conan are in the car, on the way to a job.}
MouriKogoro: Easy job, easy money! That's the way I like it.
EdogawaConan: \And of course he'll waste all the money on beer and gambling again.\
MouriKogoro: Only the best for the great Moooouuuri Kogoro!
MouriKogoro: Nyahahahahaha!
MouriRan: *facepalm* Dad...
* EdogawaConan stares out the window, looking bored.
MouriKogoro: You should be thankful, Ran.
MouriKogoro: \Now you can't get on me for buying too much beer...\
MouriRan: \I'll take him to Araide-sensei, he needs rehab!\
MouriKogoro: All right, we are here. *clears his throat and fixes his tie.*
EdogawaConan: Ah...*gets out* \Nice place.\
MouriRan: *gets out, quiet*
MouriKogoro: Uwaa! So expensive! *rubs his hands together.* \Money, Money, Money!\
* Manor is a large and discerning estate, characterized by a European style. It is filled with decorative shrubs, the pathway to the manor itself barred by a cast-iron gate. The path itself is stone, probably slate, and is flanked by two fountains.
MouriKogoro: All right, brat. *looks at Conan.* Don't touch anything. Got it? *glares down at him*
EdogawaConan: Yeah, I got it. Ran-neechan? Let's go in!
MouriRan: Don’t be mean, dad! *sighs* ... W-- Wow--- *stares at the manor* It's beautiful!
EdogawaConan: \Yeah, beautiful....\ *staring up at Ran*
* MouriKogoro approaches the gate, not sure at first how to address making himself known
* MouriKogoro clears his throat and rings the gate bell.
EdogawaConan: *shakes himself out of his contemplation and rushes to catch up* Ah, ojisan!
* MouriRan walks, looking at the fountains, amazed, with a smile. She shakes her head and rushes to catch up her dad.
MouriRan: Don’t you think this place is great? *grabs Conan's hand and smiles*
EdogawaConan: Yeah.... *smiles up at Ran, a little wistfully*
* Assistant rushes out the front door to the gate.
Assistant: Ah, you must be Mouri-san, the detective, here about the job?
MouriKogoro: Yes, That'd be me. The great detective Mouri Kogoro
MouriKogoro: This is my daughter *points to Ran* and the free loader is Conan. *points to Conan.*
EdogawaConan: \Would you quit it with the "freeloader" business?\
Assistant: I see. They're welcome to wait inside while you speak with the master of the house, if you'd like.
MouriKogoro: That would be fine.
MouriKogoro: Keep an eye on him, Ran.
EdogawaConan: \You're the one that someone needs to keep an eye on...\
MouriRan: Yes, yes... *rolleyes*
EdogawaConan: I'll be good!
* EdogawaConan smiles up at Ran.
MouriRan: I know... But stay with me, please? *winks at him*
EdogawaConan: Ah...y-yes...*blushing*
* Assistant opens the gate and directs them to the front door, locking the gate behind them.
* MouriKogoro follows their lead
* MouriRan follows her dad
* EdogawaConan walks along with Ran, his hand still in hers, red-faced and unable to look at her.
Assistant: Please excuse the formality of all the iron and locks. Kawano-sama enjoys his privacy, which is why his estate is so far out into the countryside.
MouriKogoro: Understandable. It is a marvelous place.
* Assistant nods at Kogoro.
MouriKogoro: Now, should we get down to business? I assume Kawano doesn't want to waste another second.
Assistant: You're quite right sir.
* Assistant opens the door to the main hall.
MouriKogoro: All right, you two can wait here. *looks to Ran and Conan*
Assistant: If you'd be willing to wait just a moment here, I'll direct your children to the waiting room. Kawano-sama will be waiting for you in the sitting room.
EdogawaConan: OK...
*EdogawaConan carefully slips a tracker-button into Kogoro’s pocket as he passes.
* Assistant walks Ran and Conan to the end of the hall and indicates a door on the left.
MouriKogoro: Right.
Assistant: You may wait in here. I must now go to attend to Mouri-san. If you need anything, use the intercom.
* MouriKogoro stands tall and all mighty
MouriRan: Thanks! Let's go in, Conan-kun! *walks into the room*
* EdogawaConan reluctantly follows Ran.
* Assistant returns to Kogoro and escorts him up a floor to the sitting room.
* MouriKogoro follows keeping his cool.
* Assistant stops at the door.
Assistant: I'll wait outside, as Kawano-sama has asked for his privacy. If there is anything at all that you need, do not hesitate to ask me.
* Assistant opens the door for Kogoro.
* MouriKogoro steps inside
MouriKogoro: Thank you. *slight bow*
* Assistant closes the door and stands outside.
* KawanoKiyoshi looks up from a cup of tea.
* KawanoKiyoshi sets the tea down and stands up from his chair, extending a hand.
KawanoKiyoshi: You must be the great detective Mouri Kogoro-san. I've heard a lot about you!
MouriKogoro: Hello, Kawano-san. *shakes hand firmly*
MouriKogoro: I must say it's an honor to be at your service.
KawanoKiyoshi: I suppose you'll want to know more about why I asked you here?
MouriKogoro: Yes, of course.
KawanoKiyoshi: Well, before I begin, I must ask for your utmost professionalism. The task that I would set you with must remain a secret for the duration of your work.
KawanoKiyoshi: Are you up to the challenge?
MouriKogoro: Of course. It's my duty to keep secrets
MouriKogoro: I would not be a great detective if people couldn't confide in me.
KawanoKiyoshi: Right then, if you'll have a seat.
* MouriKogoro nods and sits down
* KawanoKiyoshi offers Kogoro a cup of tea.
MouriKogoro: Ah. Thank you. *gracefully takes the tea*
KawanoKiyoshi: I actually need you to look into the lives of my three sons, Kita, Kenji, and Kane, who are all visiting this weekend.
MouriKogoro: Of course. I will do my best. What do you need me to investigate?
KawanoKiyoshi: You see, despite my attempts to bring them up as best I can, I cannot help but seem to think each one is unworthy of their inheritance in one way or another. I realize that I can't live forever, however, and I want to decide who has proven himself most worthy of my great fortune.
KawanoKiyoshi: Perhaps it would help your investigation if you knew a little about them?
MouriKogoro: Of course. *nods*
KawanoKiyoshi: Kita-kun is the eldest son. He has grown into a soft-spoken man who is gifted in mathematics. He has become a very successful stockbroker, but while he is admirable in his use of money, he is too apathetic about others. I've noticed he feels superior to his brothers, and he doesn't mind crushing small businesses for profit. I must know if he is truly so cruel.
MouriKogoro: \Eh, the oldest is a math nerd...\
MouriKogoro: Hmmm. Seems very money driven. The others?
KawanoKiyoshi: Kenji-kun is the middle child. While he does not share his brother's seemingly dark heart, he is apathetic to the most important things in life. He is satisfactory with his money, and he is polite, so it would seem there is nothing wrong with him, but he seems to be far too distant. How can I bequeath my fortune to a son who I barely know for his true self?
MouriKogoro: Hm. Very logical.
KawanoKiyoshi: Kane-kun is the youngest of my children. He is the foil to my oldest son, it seems, because he is very friendly and outgoing-- I know he has many friends and travels in many social circles, but he is very loose with his money. If I gave him my fortune, I feel it would not last on to future generations, and instead be squandered on pithy trinkets.
MouriKogoro: Mm... Indeed.
MouriKogoro: What do Kenji-san and Kane-san do for a living?
KawanoKiyoshi: Kenji-kun is crafty. He's the owner of an oil company, which he purchased through proper investment. It's not a large one, but he is able to make quite a reasonable sum.
KawanoKiyoshi: Kane-kun is outgoing, and he makes money through investment or through what I give him, but he doesn't hold a steady job.
* MouriKogoro nods
MouriKogoro: I understand.
MouriKogoro: How old are they if I may ask? This might come in handy in my investigation.
KawanoKiyoshi: They were born two years apart in sequence, so they age 36, 34, and 32, respectively.
KawanoKiyoshi: I want you to not only determine if the rumors about my sons are true, but discover more so I can decide who is most worthy of my fortune.
MouriKogoro: I will do exactly that, sir.
KawanoKiyoshi: Thank you, Mouri-san.
KawanoKiyoshi: It would be acceptable for you to meet with my sons in this house, as they are visiting, but don't reveal your purpose.
MouriKogoro: Of course not. I'll simply say I brought my daughter to see the country side and we brought Conan along.
KawanoKiyoshi: I see. Good luck. If you'd like, you can enjoy dinner with us in the main dining hall in two hours. In the mean time, I have a guest room set aside for you for the weekend.
MouriKogoro: Yes sir. *nods*
KawanoKiyoshi: If you'll ask my assistant, he will direct you to you to your room.
* KawanoKiyoshi directs Kogoro to the door.
* MouriKogoro follows
* Assistant opens the door.
MouriKogoro: Assistant-san, would you lead us to our room?
MouriKogoro: We should get our things inside
Assistant: Of course, Mouri-san. Should I direct your companions there next?
MouriKogoro: Please.
* Assistant takes Kogoro down the hall and indicates a room on the right before heading downstairs and directing Ran and Conan to the same room.
MouriRan: *looks at the assistant, smiling* Thank you~
EdogawaConan: Ah...we can go in now?
Assistant: Of course. Call me if you need anything.
* Assistant nods at Conan.
Assistant: Dinner will be ready in about two hours. I will come collect you at that time if you wish to join us.
EdogawaConan: Thanks...
MouriRan: Thanks a lot! *smiles and pushes Conan into the room*
MouriKogoro: Thank you. *slight bow*
* Assistant heads back downstairs.
{Dinnertime}
MouriRan: So, *heading downstairs* we don’t have to say anything about your case, right?
MouriKogoro: Exactly. None of the case can be said.
* EdogawaConan walks quietly behind Ran.
* KawanoKiyoshi gets up from the table as Kogoro, Ran, and Conan enter the dining room.
KawanoKiyoshi: Ah, Kita-kun, Kane-kun, please, come meet my guest. This is Mouri Kogoro-san, an associate of mine. I've invited him to stay the weekend with us.
* KawanoKane grins and stands up, "The pleasure is mine, Mouri-san."
KawanoKita: Mouri Kogoro-san?
* KawanoKita raises a brow, still sitting.
KawanoKita: The detective?
MouriKogoro: You must be Kane-san, Kenji-san, and Kita-san.
* KawanoKita glares.
MouriKogoro: I am indeed the great Mouri Kogoro
KawanoKiyoshi: Actually, Kenji-kun won't be dining with us. He decided he wasn't hungry. He can be quite the hermit.
MouriKogoro: Ah, that's a shame
MouriKogoro: This is my daughter, Ran. *points to Ran.* and Conan here is staying with us. *points to Conan*
* EdogawaConan bows in greeting.
MouriRan: Yoroshiku~ *smiles and bows in greeting*
* MouriKogoro sits down at the table
KawanoKane: You're giving shelter to this boy who isn't your son? How noble. Mouri-san, you, sir, must be a saint. Please, indulge us with your company.
MouriKogoro: Yes. It is my pleasure to look after someone even for the smallest sum.
* MouriRan sits down next to Kogoro
* EdogawaConan sits next to Ran.
* MouriRan glares at Kogoro \Yes, how noble of you, dad *rolleyes*. Taking care of Conan-kun...\
KawanoKiyoshi: We'll have an array of food. I like to have quite a few options when entertaining guests.
MouriKogoro: That sounds very nice, Kawano-san.
KawanoKita: The food is actually already ready, father. Kinjo-san had the cook hold it until our guests had arrived.
KawanoKiyoshi: How good of him. I'm sure it will still be warm, then.
MouriKogoro: Kinjo? Is that the assistant's name?
* KawanoKiyoshi summons the assistant and has him bring the food to the table. The table is quickly covered by a wide array of traditional Japanese and European foods.
EdogawaConan: \And of course you never bothered to ask...\
KawanoKiyoshi: It is indeed. I'm not surprised he didn't mention it. Kinjo-kun is very professional.
MouriKogoro: I'm sorry that I didn't ask. *laughs sheepishly*
* MouriKogoro clears his throat
MouriKogoro: We should eat before it gets cold. Thank you for the meal, Kinjo-san.
KawanoKiyoshi: Of course.
* KawanoKiyoshi reaches for a piece of meat, but thinks better of it and sighs before reaching for the salad bowl.
* KawanoKita fills his bowl with rice and contents himself with that alone.
* KawanoKane begins heaping various foods from the entire table onto his plate.
* MouriKogoro takes mental notes
* MouriRan starts eating quietly, picking various foods \Mm! I'll ask Kinjo-san about this recipe!\
* EdogawaConan eats quietly, watching everyone.
* MouriKogoro licks his lips taking various foods
MouriKogoro: Mmmm! This is delicious.
* KawanoKiyoshi chuckles.
KawanoKiyoshi: If you want to keep it delicious, I'd avoid the salad. We have an excellent cook, but this new dressing he has been using is too bitter. Still, experimentation is a trait of brilliance, they say.
* KawanoKane laughs.
KawanoKane: Father, you're only complaining because you have to keep a diet. I think the salad tastes fine.
MouriKogoro: Hah. Is that so?
* KawanoKita finishes eating.
KawanoKita: It was delicious as always. Kinjo-kun, please give my compliments to the chef.
MouriKogoro: Yes. I'd have to agree with Kita-kun
KawanoKane: How would you know if the whole meal was any good, Kita-kun? You eat like a bird!
* KawanoKita glares at Kane.
MouriKogoro: Now, now. Everyone has their own way of eating...
KawanoKita: At least I'm doing something with my life instead of wasting it away on endless meaningless parties.
KawanoKane: Hey, I'll have you know--
KawanoKiyoshi: Enough!
KawanoKiyoshi: I won't have fighting in front of our guests.
KawanoKiyoshi: Kita-kun, if you're done, just excuse yourself from the table.
* KawanoKita nods.
KawanoKita: Of course. I planned on it anyway.
* KawanoKita excuses himself and heads upstairs.
* EdogawaConan is watching closely, but keeping quiet.
* KawanoKane notices Conan.
KawanoKane: Don't let him bother you, kid! He's an old stick in the mud. Here, try some of this.
* KawanoKane passes Conan a bowl of curry.
* MouriRan smiles at Kane
EdogawaConan: Ah...thank you. *tries some* Mm, it's good!
EdogawaConan: \Not as good as Ran's, though...\
KawanoKane: So, Mouri-san, you're a friend of my father's?
MouriKogoro: Ah... I thought I'd stop by with my family, show them the land.
MouriKogoro: It's very beautiful out here.
KawanoKane: You're quite right. My father has admirable taste in landscaping.
MouriRan: *smiles at Conan* Shinichi also loved curry, as you... *whispering to herself*
EdogawaConan: A-ah…*stares at her for a moment, frozen* Ah….yeah…*whispering very quietly*
KawanoKane: Not that either of my brothers would care to notice, cooping themselves up with their books and selves all day.
KawanoKiyoshi: Kane-kun, do not speak badly of your brothers behind their backs.
* KawanoKane nods.
KawanoKane: Apologies.
KawanoKiyoshi: Ah, it's just as well.
MouriKogoro: Sounds like you don't have a good relationship among yourselves, your brothers I mean.
KawanoKane: Ah, well, it's mostly just rivalry, I imagine. They're an okay lot.
KawanoKiyoshi: Well, I need to go for my walk. It's the other demon to go with the salad. Still, doctor says I've got some life left in me if I put in the work.
MouriKogoro: Hah.
MouriKogoro: When do you think Kenji-san will show up?
KawanoKane: He's a recluse. He usually eats in his room.
* KawanoKiyoshi gets up and heads out the door to the hall, headed outside.
MouriKogoro: Ah. *small smile*
KawanoKane: Perhaps I can interest you in some entertainment while we wait for father to return?
MouriKogoro: That would be nice.
MouriRan: What kind of entertainment? *smiles at Kane*
KawanoKane: Unlike my brothers, I have some culture. I'm an expert pianist, if you'd care to hear a tune.
MouriKogoro: That would be marvelous!
MouriRan: \Hey, I play the piano too! Why are you so excited about it?\ *rolleyes*
* KawanoKane leads the group up to the second floor, retracing the banister back toward the front of the house after ascending the stairs. The room overlooking the entrance to the house has a large grand piano in the front of it with a collection of sheet music on the front.
KawanoKane: I'll play you one of my favorites. You may notice that my father is a fan of European culture, and I am as well.
MouriKogoro: Yes. I saw the wonderful spread of European food
KawanoKane: The song I'll play for you tonight is Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor.
KawanoKane: Written by Ludwig van Beethoven, it is more commonly known as...
KawanoKane: Moonlight Sonata.
* MouriRan stares at Kane and shivers, remembering Moonlight Sonata's case
EdogawaConan: \This just reminds me of that case.....\ *looks upset*
MouriKogoro: Eh? That is a beautiful song...
* KawanoKane begins to play.
* EdogawaConan looks more upset.
* KawanoKane gets about a third of the way into the song.
* MouriKogoro looks in awe
* MouriRan grabs Conan hand, staring at the piano, trying to think about something else, and not that case
* EdogawaConan squeezes her hand tightly, also trying not to think about the case.
* KawanoKane gets two-thirds of the way through the song.
* KawanoKita clicks on the intercom, interrupting.
* KawanoKane stops.
MouriKogoro: Oh? *looks at the intercom*
KawanoKita: Everyone, get down here now!
EdogawaConan: !!
* KawanoKane paces over to the intercom.
* EdogawaConan drops Ran's hand.
* KawanoKane presses the button.
MouriKogoro: What happened?!
KawanoKane: Kita-kun, you interrupted my song for the guests. What is it?
KawanoKita: Father is dead, out in the yard!
* KawanoKane gasps.
* MouriKogoro gets close to the intercom. "WHAT?!"
EdogawaConan: !!
MouriRan: What?! *scared*
* EdogawaConan runs downstairs and out to the scene.
KawanoKita: I just found him! He's horribly burned!
* KawanoKane chases after Conan.
* MouriRan follows Conan
MouriKogoro: Wait, brat! *runs after Conan.*
* KawanoKane bursts out the back door.
KawanoKita: Over here!
MouriKogoro: No one touch the body!
* MouriKogoro runs ahead of everyone to the body.
* KawanoKita waves from about fifty feet away, mostly obscured by decorative bushes.
* EdogawaConan arrives at the scene and looks around, trying to piece together what happened.
* KawanoKiyoshi has a face marred by horrible burns all over his face, but the rest of him looks mostly fine.
MouriKogoro: Che. Damn it.
* KawanoKiyoshi has in his left hand, which is also burned somewhat, an ashen cigarette.
* KawanoKiyoshi has a silver lighter in his right hand.
EdogawaConan: \The lighter exploded?\
KawanoKane: He was smoking...?
KawanoKita: That's what I was wondering about...
MouriKogoro: An accelerant for the cigarette... Which means someone must have fooled with the lighter… Where is Kenji-san?
MouriKogoro: *serious look.*
* KawanoKiyoshi has a silver lighter that is horribly charred, especially near the top. The mechanism appears to be fine except for being totally black.
* MouriRan stares at the corpse and covers her mouth, muffling a scream
KawanoKita: Kenji-san? He wasn't with you?
KawanoKita: I paged the entire house, I assumed he'd come down too.
* MouriKogoro shakes his head
MouriKogoro: How suspicious... The one who was missing, is still missing and now this happens
KawanoKane: That bastard! His father is dead and he won't even come out of his stupid room!
KawanoKane: He only thinks about himself!
KawanoKita: Kane-kun, not in front of father, would you disrespect his memory?
KawanoKane: Disrespect him? What were you even doing out here, Kita-kun?
* KawanoKita glances away. "I came to ask him a question... I never expected... this."
* EdogawaConan investigates the rest of the scene, listening with half an ear to the argument.
MouriKogoro: No matter the case, this is a crime scene
EdogawaConan: \Lighter was rigged, but who did it?\
MouriKogoro: We should step away from the body.
MouriKogoro: That includes you. *picks up Conan by the collar.*
KawanoKane: Well why was he smoking, then?
KawanoKita: I don't know. That seems strange.
MouriKogoro: Indeed. He seemed to be on a healthy streak earlier
* KawanoKita nods.
KawanoKita: Father was a healthy person. He used to smoke, but he stopped- or told us he did- when his doctor ordered it.
KawanoKane: Eh, either way we need to find out where Kenji is.
* EdogawaConan is investigating by the big decorative shrubs, at the edge of the stone path, looking for any traces of how this occurred, and generally trying to stay out of Kogoro's reach.
* MouriRan gets out of the crime scene, away from the horrifying dead body
* MouriKogoro grunts and grumbles
MouriKogoro: Anyway. You two. *looks at Kane and Kita.* Where is Kenji's room?
KawanoKita: He's on the second floor, like all of the bedrooms.
KawanoKane: We'll head up there now. Actually, where is Kinjo-san?
MouriKogoro: Then let's go question him, shall we?
KawanoKita: I found him near the intercom. I asked him to call the police and an ambulance.
KawanoKita: I don't think the ambulance will be necessary, taking a better look...
* KawanoKane nods at Kogoro.
KawanoKane: Follow me.
* KawanoKane leads them to Kenji's room.
* MouriRan is sitting near the piano, at the entrance.
* MouriKogoro follows
MouriRan: *takes a deep breath*
* KawanoKane knocks on the door.
KawanoKane: Kenji-kun! Get out here! Your father is dead and you can't even come out to pay him some respect?
KawanoKita: Kenji-kun, Mouri-san wants to ask you some questions.
* KawanoKane knocks harder.
MouriKogoro: Oi... Stand aside!
* MouriKogoro bangs on the door
MouriKogoro: This is no a murder case, open up are we are knocking it down!
* MouriKogoro runs to the others
MouriKogoro: Someone go get the Assistant
KawanoKita: Yes, Kinjo-san has a master key. He would be able to access the room.
KawanoKane: I'll go get him.
KawanoKita: Very well...
* KawanoKane rushes off and returns with the assistant, key in hand.
* KawanoKane jabs the key into the lock and turns it in.
KawanoKane: Kenji, we're coming in!
* KawanoKane slams open the door.
