Episode 27: Three Heirs Murder Case, Part 2

{Episode 27}

Opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t5Nc0VVmjU

MouriKogoro: Last time on Detective Conan, I, the great detective Mouri Kogoro got called into a job. Of course Ran and that freeloader came along... Things were just going fine and all to plan when horror struck the house hold. The head of the family was found dead on the front lawn. One of the brothers I was told to keep an eye on had been missing the whole time we were there.

MouriKogoro: Just as we approached his room, he refused to answer. We got a key to open the door, what did we see?

MouriRan: And again in Detective Conan, more corpses, more deaths, more murders, and more of that stuff. Gah, I hate this! *leaves the room*

MouriKogoro: Well, you'll have to see on this episode of Detective Conan!

KawanoKane: [Cue Title]

MouriKogoro: [Cue scene]

{The hallway outside Kawano Kenji's room}

MouriKogoro: We are coming in, Kenji-san! *he barged in so he was in front to observe the scene*

* KawanoKenji is leaning forward on his desk.

* KawanoKenji is supporting his head with his right hand, looking down at the top of it.

MouriKogoro: Oi... You all stay back. *puts his arm up and approaches him*

KawanoKane: Hey, are you alright?

* KawanoKenji doesn't move.

MouriKogoro: *touches his neck for a pulse*

* EdogawaConan walks in and looks around.

* KawanoKenji falls over on the side opposite he was touched.

* MouriKogoro shakes his head

KawanoKane: Kenji-kun?!

MouriKogoro: Damn it. Two are dead

* EdogawaConan goes over to investigate Kenji-san more closely.

KawanoKita: What?

KawanoKita: That can't be!

MouriKogoro: Oi, didn't I tell you to stay back?! *picks up Conan and carries him to the door.

* EdogawaConan flails, trying to escape from ojisan's grip.

EdogawaConan: Hey, ojisan!!

MouriKogoro: Where are the police? *looks at Kita*

EdogawaConan: But I wanna help!

KawanoKita: How should I know?

KawanoKita: They should be here soon, but we're far out in the country.

MouriKogoro: Your brother and father just died on the same day, you think you could show some emotion?!

* MouriKogoro takes out a hanky and closes the door

* KawanoKita glares at Kogoro.

MouriKogoro: Bring everyone to the main hall.

KawanoKane: Right, but I think everyone is here, since we brought Kinjo-san up.

* KinjoMasajun nods.

MouriKogoro: Then questioning should be easy...

KawanoKita: Wait a minute, what about the cook?

KinjoMasajun: Didn't I tell you before? The cook is out this evening.

KawanoKane: I cooked tonight's meal, not that you ever stopped to acknowledge who you're giving "compliments" to.

KinjoMasajun: That's correct.

KawanoKita: I see. Well, we should probably go to the sitting room anyway: better than being out in the hall.

KawanoKane: "Better than being out in the hall"? That's all you have to say?

* EdogawaConan escapes from Kogoro and goes back to investigate the second scene again.

KinjoMasajun: If I may, Kogoro-san.

MouriKogoro: Yes.

KinjoMasajun: I'm the only one with a master key to the house. Since Kenji-san locked his door, I don't know how someone could have entered the room.

MouriKogoro: Then it's a locked room murder case as far as we know. As soon as the police get here, we can investigate farther...

MouriKogoro: Kinjo-san, Kita-san, where were you two before and at the time that Kawano-san was murdered?

* EdogawaConan is wandering around Kenji-san's room, looking for clues.

KawanoKita: Wait, murder?

KawanoKita: You couldn't possibly think one of us is responsible for this, could you?

MouriKogoro: Besides Ran, Conan, and myself, any of you could be the culprit.

KawanoKita: So you're accusing my brother and our family's assistant? You're the shady character, Kogoro-san. Exactly what was your relationship with our father?

EdogawaConan: \Good thing I put that button in his pocket earlier...\ *half-listening through the glasses to Kogoro questioning the others*

MouriKogoro: I was hired to do a job for him.

KawanoKane: He's also accusing you, Kita-san. It's no secret that you've been angling to gain control of father's assets after he died. Are you eliminating the competition?

* KawanoKita glares at Kane.

KawanoKita: And what about you? You're going broke ever since he cut you off. Finding it a little hard to keep afloat without help?

KinjoMasajun: Please, stop fighting. What would Kawano-sama say?

* KawanoKane glares at Kita and puts his hands up before turning away and walking toward the sitting room.

MouriKogoro: This is no time or place to fight.

MouriKogoro: Now, Kita-san, where were you before you found Kawano-san's body?

KawanoKita: Where was I before I found his body? I was upstairs, don't you remember me leaving?

EdogawaConan: \Strangled with a wire, and then the body was positioned afterward.....\ *goes to look at the lock* \No way anyone could've picked this, it's much too complicated...which means someone had the key...\

MouriKogoro: Kinjo-san, what about you?

KinjoMasajun: I was downstairs, in the dining room, helping clean up after the meal.

MouriKogoro: Hmm. You are the only one who can't be verified...

* EdogawaConan goes back to check the body again.

EdogawaConan: \Kuso....can't really tell....he hasn't been dead all that long, but....where's the wire anyway?\ *goes looking for the wire, and any other clues he can pick up on the way, still keeping half an ear out for Kogoro's conversation coming through the glasses*

KinjoMasajun: Er-- Kogoro-san?

MouriKogoro: What?

MouriKogoro: \I need to go outside to check the rigor mortis\

KinjoMasajun: I don't know if this helps, but what Kane-kun and Kita-kun said before was accurate.

KinjoMasajun: If it was either of them, it could have been motivated by Kawano-sama's fortune. There was reason to believe he thought one of his sons was unworthy of his inheritance.

KawanoKane: That's out of line!

KawanoKita: It's true, though. Didn't you already say you were worried about father judging each of us? Even I can admit that I was worried he'd write me out.

MouriKogoro: That's very true, but they both have valid alibis for Kawano's murder; we don't know enough about Kenji's to make an assumption.

* MouriRan starts playing the piano

* EdogawaConan goes to have another look at the lock, trying to see if any part of it might have been manipulated in any way.

* Piano hits an awkward note on a key near the middle of the piano.

MouriKogoro: Ah! \So that’s how it was!\

EdogawaConan: Huh? *noting the weird note*

MouriRan: Uh?... This... *plays again* This key...

* Piano hits an awkward note again.

* EdogawaConan runs to check out the piano.

EdogawaConan: Ran-neechan!

MouriRan: Ah? Conan-kun...

EdogawaConan: *darting into the piano room*

EdogawaConan: The piano sounds weird....*runs over to it and jumps up for a closer look at the strings*

MouriKogoro: \So that's how it was...\

* Piano reveals that one of the keys near the middle of the case is loose.

EdogawaConan: \The wire that was used to kill Kenji-san must've been hidden in here...or taken from here…*\

MouriRan: A... wire?

EdogawaConan: What key was that? The sour note?

MouriRan: Look... *points at the wire*

* MouriKogoro runs to the piano room

MouriRan: This one... *plays the key* See? The wire is making it sound weird... I don’t get it... A wire, here?

MouriKogoro: I've got it. Who killed Kenji-san.

MouriKogoro: Ran, you found the evidence

KawanoKane: You do?

MouriRan: Kenji-san...?!

MouriKogoro: That's right, Kane-san.

EdogawaConan: \Well, we certainly found where he hid the murder weapon at least...\

EdogawaConan: Ne, Ran-neechan? Can you play that song again? The one Kane-san was playing for us earlier? Please?

MouriRan: Kenji-san is dead?! *stares at Conan* Moonlight Sonata? S--- Sure...

* Piano has sheet music on it.

* MouriRan sits in front of the piano and starts playing

MouriKogoro: Ah. Unfortunately.

* Piano sounds horribly out of tune as the note is hit several times.

EdogawaConan: Ne, Ran-neechan...that doesn't sound like how Kane-san was playing it earlier....

KawanoKane: Hm?

* EdogawaConan is giving the Kane the "I have you now..." stare.

* KawanoKane smiles and taps his head.

KawanoKane: You're right, good catch little guy.

KawanoKane: I don't play to the sheet music. I have the song memorized by heart.

EdogawaConan: You played it lower so you wouldn't hit the busted key. How long has that key been busted?

KawanoKane: I play the song naturally lower on the keyboard, because it sounds better when played on the low end.

KawanoKane: I guess that's why I didn't notice the keyboard being out of tune...

MouriRan: ... There's something... Even if you change the tone...

* MouriRan starts playing Moonlight sonata again, lower on the keyboard

* Piano sounds like before.

MouriKogoro: Hm.

MouriKogoro: *smiles*

EdogawaConan: So it's just the one key that's busted.

EdogawaConan: And you knew it was busted....

* KawanoKane shrugs.

KawanoKane: I didn't know.

KawanoKane: Like I said, I prefer to play Moonlight Sonata on the low end.

MouriKogoro: Hm.

* MouriKogoro chuckles

MouriKogoro: I know who did it, I know what happened

MouriKogoro: It was you, Kita-san!

KawanoKita: What?

* KawanoKane scoffs.

KawanoKita: Yes, I imagine you have determined I killed my father by breaking the piano? Stop making a fool of yourself, tantei.

MouriKogoro: Just by that?

* MouriRan plays every key in the keyboard, to see if any other key sounds weird

* Piano only has one busted key.

MouriKogoro: Your father told me how you were a greedy man. There is no doubt you'd kill him in order to get the money. All that was left was to kill your brothers.

KawanoKita: That's preposterous!

MouriKogoro: But, killing both would seem suspicious. So you tried to frame Kane by taking a wire from the piano since you knew he was skilled at it.

KawanoKita: And what proof do you have of these wild accusations?

MouriKogoro: Aya....

* MouriKogoro realizes something

MouriKogoro: Kita-san, are you a smoker?

KawanoKita: What does that have to do with anything?

MouriKogoro: I'll be glad to explain if you'll answer my question.

KawanoKita: No, I don't smoke. I'm no hypocrite.

MouriKogoro: Hooo~?

MouriRan: \The... lighter?... \

MouriKogoro: You were the one who brought up your father used to smoke, and told all of you he stopped. But from what he told me, you don't keep in touch all that often. You could have easily switched lighters seeing as how you were the only one who could make the switch seeing as you were the one who found the body.

KawanoKita: I could understand your implication of me if you were trying to say I gave him lung cancer...

KawanoKita: but I don't really understand what you're getting at otherwise.

MouriKogoro: I'm saying you made sure the lighter he had with him was combustible, so when he had a light it'd explode.

MouriKogoro: Then after he had died from the burns, you went to the body to switch the combusted lighter with a "new" one.

KawanoKita: And what did I do with this theoretical lighter of yours?

MouriKogoro: Well, seeing as how you have been with us the whole time, it should be on you.

MouriKogoro: Kita-san, empty your pockets.

* KawanoKita turns out his pockets, and a half-combusted lighter falls out.

KawanoKita: What?

KawanoKita: That's not mine.

KawanoKane: It looks like you've been caught red handed by the great detective, brother.

KinjoMasajun: I can't believe it.

KawanoKita: This isn't my lighter! I've been framed!

MouriKogoro: To do something so despicable...

MouriKogoro: Like I said, it'd been impossible to ditch it without someone noticing. Just give up. You've been caught

* EdogawaConan hops down from the piano and shoots Kogoro with the tranq watch.

EdogawaConan: \Enough. I'll take it from here, occhan.\ *dialing the bowtie to the right voice*

MouriKogoro: Ayaaa~~ *sits on the piano bench cross legged*

EdogawaConan: *Mouri* Ah, Kita-san, it isn't you.

KawanoKane: What?!

KawanoKita: ... Is this some kind of sick joke?

Conan|Mouri: Not a joke. A test.

KawanoKita: What kind of test was that?!

KawanoKane: That's not important, you idiot.

KawanoKane: Who was the killer, then?

Conan|Mouri: That should be obvious, Kane-kun. The killer...is you!

MouriRan: K--- Kane-san?

KawanoKane: What?!

KawanoKane: Who are you going to accuse next? Kinjo-san?

Conan|Mouri: No, Kane-kun, I'm afraid I don't have time to play games tonight.

Conan|Mouri: Your trick was clever, but I'm afraid you made a dire mistake when you underestimated me as your opponent.

MouriRan: But... Dad...

MouriRan: He was with us!

Conan|Mouri: That's correct, Ran, but it was only part of the trick.

MouriRan: ... How?!

Conan|Mouri: You see, Kane-kun made sure that he wouldn't have to be at the crime scene for the first crime, and for the second, he was careful to take care of things ahead of time.

Conan|Mouri: Kenji-kun was dead before dinner. That's the reason you played low on the piano.

KawanoKane: That's hardly proof at all. I didn't know that choosing to play low was now evidence of murder.

Conan|Mouri: That alone isn't, but I'll get there in a moment.

Conan|Mouri: Now, I think it's obvious at this point that you used the piano's wire to strangle Kenji-kun.

KawanoKane: Even if that's true, then how could I get in the room?

Conan|Mouri: We only assumed the room was locked. Conan-kun noticed that the locks on the doors are advanced five-pin locks. This is significant, because high security locks have false pins that cause them all to reset if pressed.

Conan|Mouri: You simply killed Kenji-kun, and pressed a false switch to make the room lock.

Conan|Mouri: But perhaps my largest clue was when you told us that you were the cook this evening.

* KawanoKane gives a shocked look.

Conan|Mouri: I noticed that Kiyoshi-san told us the salad was bitter, so I resolved to try some.

Conan|Mouri: He was correct, but I didn't realize until much later just why that was.

Conan|Mouri: After noting this, I checked the scent. A characteristic sweet, but unpleasant smell confirmed my suspicions.

Conan|Mouri: Diethyl ether. A liquid with an extremely low flash point, but used to be commonly mixed with other foods for recreational consumption.

Conan|Mouri: I noticed you mentioned that it didn't seem bitter at all, despite what I tasted.

Conan|Mouri: Diethyl ether is absolutely safe for consumption, as long as not mixed with fire.

Conan|Mouri: When Kiyoshi-san went to use his lighter, the flame near his mouth engulfed his whole throat in fire.

Conan|Mouri: The bitter dressing for the salad was, in summary, your handiwork, as the cook.

Conan|Mouri: Even if Kiyoshi-san had been able to scream with his throat on fire, we wouldn't be able to hear over your recital of Moonlight Sonata.

Conan|Mouri: All you had left to do was plant the fake lighter on Kita-kun and wait for me to fall into your trap, which I almost did.

* MouriRan stares at Kane

* KawanoKane stares at Kogoro.

* KawanoKane starts to chuckle softly.

KawanoKane: It's right. That's how all of it happened.

* KawanoKita shoots a glare at Kane.

KawanoKane: It was the perfect crime, you know.

KawanoKane: Our father's will stated that the estate would be split between the three of us, unless one was implicated in a felony, in which case their third was forfeit to the remaining survivors.

* MouriKogoro stands up with a solemn look on his face.

* EdogawaConan puts his bowtie away and goes to stand by Ran.

KawanoKane: I figured that if I was able to deal with Kenji-kun and father and make it look like Kita-kun did it, I would be the sole recipient.

MouriKogoro: Even with such fortune and royalties, killing your own family for your greed is the most despicable thing you could possibly do.

* MouriRan starts shedding little tears

MouriKogoro: Instead of making amends, you stooped down to low levels of evil.

* KawanoKane smiles.

KawanoKane: That's why I was laughing, Detective.

KawanoKane: I didn't realize, until seeing your brilliant work in action, that life is so much more important than money.

KawanoKane: I've been such a fool.

* KawanoKane puts his face in his hands.

* KawanoKita glares at Kane-kun at first, but then softens. "Perhaps you're right. I never valued my family before tonight but as assets, and now I'll never have the opportunity..."

* KawanoKane sobs.

KawanoKita: [Fade to black]
